this is very bad rn, i'm aware. everything is unfinished, feel free to check back later if you want something more polished!
so, what even is an oingo boingo?
oingo boingo was a band formed in 1979 by danny elfman and several of the members from a theatre troupe called the mystic knights of the oingo boingo
who were the members?
the lineup started with danny elfman as lead singer, steve bartek as lead guitarist, johnny "vatos" hernandez as drummer [though david eagle briefly replaced vatos in 1980, and during urgh! a music war.] , kerry hatch as bassist, dan schmidt as keyboardist, sam "sluggo" phipps on tenor and soprano sax, leon schneiderman on alto and baritone sax, and dale turner on trumpet and trombone. dan's time as keyboardist was short-lived, as he only appeared on the self titled EP and forbidden zone soundtrack, being quickly replaced by richard "ribbs" gibbs in 1980. in 1984, shortly after the recording of the album so-lo, kerry and ribbs left the band to do another band called zuma ii, with john avila and mike bacich replacing them as bassist and keyboardist respectively. mike left the band in 1987 after the release of boi-ngo, replaced by carl graves.
in 1993, the horn section and keyboards were removed entirely, and second guitarist warren fitzgerald joins the band. the horn section and keyboardist marc mann are still credited on the album boingo, along with carl credited for backing vocals on the track lost like this. the horn section is brought back on halloween 1995 for oingo boingo's farewell concert.
speaking of the mystic knights...
the mystic knights of the oingo boingo were a street theatre troupe formed in 1972 by richard elfman. they preformed a mix of material from the early 20th century and original pieces. in 1976, richard left the mystic knights to pursue filmmaking, leaving his brother danny as the leader
album ranking
i'll elaborate on the ratings some day i promise
this list does not include the demo EP, the 10" EP, you got your baby back, live albums such as boingo alive and farewell, compilations such as best o boingo and marching in time, or the forbidden zone soundtrack
my history with the band!!
obviously, i wasn't alive when they were active [gh, i wish (-_-;)] but i was first introduced to them when watching weird science with my father [we both LOVE 80's films :3], and when watching the tv show psych [psych shrine coming soon! :)] as the song we close our eyes played in the finale, but didn't really know either songs were by them, or who they even really were? flash forward to seventh grade and i'm looking for song reccommendations from a friend of mine. they added a few ob songs to my playlist, and i instantly fell in love the second the first song played [which was whole day off for anyone curious]. i checked out a few more of their songs [pretty much exclusively from dead man's party lol], my favorites at the time were just another day and no one lives forever
the fixation REALLY started around late 2023. this is when i was beginning to listen through their albums in their entirety instead of on a playlist in shuffle mode with several hundred other songs, started learning about the band behind the music, then later the members behind the band, y'know the usual stuff :)
